A Love of Poetry is Not Genetic and How About That New Computer

Well, I have gone and bought a computer; a slimline HP that came with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer. With the purchase of Microsoft Office, the total price, from Best Buy, 878.00, tax included. I can't install till the boy finishes his poetry project, which it turns out has been a torturous endeavor. I am sitting here like a sentinel, making sure he keeps working. Much "Poetry sucks!" "I Hate this." "Can I take a break?." Dear god let this be over before I kill him. He wants the shortest poems he can find of course, and has nixed any and all Emily Dickinson because she's "boring." My eye twitch is back.

Much trepidation about Windows Vista which I hear only bad things about but its installed on every PC. And WHEN did they stop installing Microsoft office on computers? Probably after my last computer purchase of 7 years ago. Am excited to get this up and running.

Okay, he's on the last poem of 25. He is using William Carlos Williams' Red Wheelbarrow. He is using it in his "poem I really like" category, because "there is a chicken in it." And because its short. I think this childs' main object in life is to try and make my head explode.

The Red Wheel Barrow

So much depends
Upon

A red wheelbarrow

Glazed with rain

Beside the white chicken.

William Carlos Williams

Hi. Thanks for your comment on my blog. I got a laptop last summer, with Windows Vista on it, and I haven't noticed anything bad about it yet. Maybe I'm not as computer-intensive as your other sources, but I've used Microsoft Word and Paint Shop Pro and Windows Media Player and Chiyo-chan's Cute Player, the latest generation of the Matroska codec pack, with which to watch my anime. I haven't run into any serious problems.

Ah, the interconnectedness of all things. And, as usual, Ruth is involved.

Say hi to Ryn for me!

Dear FP, I didn't go for the Dell after input from you and Le C so all is good. The boy actually writes excellent poetry and seems to genuinely like Richard Brautigan, so maybe he does have the poetry gene, just hates school assignments and enjoys pulling my chain.

Hey Gowan, Thanks for stopping by. Will forward on your hello to Ryn when next I email her. How cool that you grew up with Ruth Stone in your life. She is one of my favorite poets. I am about to install the new computer and you have given me hope that it won't be a total fiasco.

MJ, Sounds like you got a great deal. I'm sure once you fire up and cruise at the new speeds the previous 7 (computer) years will fade like a bad dream.

Glad to hear about the lad. I'm sure he's into writing in a big way and that will probably reveal itself as he grows.

Well, the new computer is up and okay so far except that the driver for the monitor keeps failing to load. Not sure why but I will eventually figure it out. Listening to Amy Correia as I type, internet radio, YES! Security stuff makes computer way too slow...but all in all this is so much better than my poor old Dell. And sound, sound sound!

All of you please, look for an article in yesterday's NY Daily News about a network of suspected serial killers who are suspected of killing 40 young college men. They leave behind an ominous smiley face that is spray painted in black paint! These killings are all around the country, freaky!!! As for the boy, he is super talented and auntie thinks he is underacheiving for attention, and to make his mother's head explode. Since his is so advanced, maybe you can introduce him to some of the macho poets like Charles Bukowski? He probably would appreciate the whole manly man anarchy of his poems.

Charles Bukowski poetry is not allowed on my book shelf.

anonymous, I really like Bukowski (forgive me MJ). I think he's greatly misunderstood because of "colorful" language usage etc. I've always loved his work but can understand why some have problems with it, still, I think his descriptive powers are incredible and his observations beautiful. I await the arrows of criticism but stand my ground. In my opinion, and it's just mine, Bukowski rules.

MJ, Even though the your PC is new you may have to defragment the hard drive. There should be a defragment option in one of your menus. I had to periodically defrag my PC at the office and it helped with speed and smoothness of operation. I'm sure you've been through it all with the Dell but thought I'd pass this along.

Hope it helps.

Thank you LC re defragmentation. I will do that tonight! As for Bukowksi, I don't have any issue with his ability as a writer, I have an issue with his anti-woman crap, guys slapping blondes with good bodies around, and the blondes (redheads, brunettes) coming back for more.

MJ, Understood. I guess I read around some content and focus on ability. Probably a callousness on my part that 's hard for me to detect. I can see your point and how that would be an issue. As always, I endeavor to evolve.
